Spring 2008 brought two separate 3 day events to the Portland Sports Dome.  The “Women’s Life Expo” and the “Boomers Expo” was an opportunity for Casco Bay Gastroenterology to reach out and educate the public on the importance of colon cancer prevention, screening colonoscopy and the importance of fiber in the diet. Visitors were able to view video footage of an actual colonoscopy, see a polyp and watch it being removed, see examples of instruments used during colonoscopy, view a procedure report that would be sent to their primary care provider,  sample and take home over the counter fiber products, take home related written material and ask questions.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Colonoscopy is an examination of the large intestine, performed while the patient is asleep. It allows the physician to examine the lining of the colon, looking for abnormal tissue, polyps or cancer. Screening colonoscopy is recommended at age 50 and should be repeated on a regular basis. Screening colonoscopy decreases the number of deaths from colon cancer. Prevention saves lives. Schedule your colonoscopy today!

Jaime Hare, FNP-C, was invited and accepted the invitation to speak to attendees of the Fall 2008 Maine Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates Conference held in Portland, Maine.

The Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates is a professional organization of nurses and associates dedicated to the safe and effective practice of gastroenterology and endoscopy nursing. SGNA carries out its mission by advancing the science and practice of gastroenterology and endoscopy nursing through education, research, advocacy, and collaboration, and by promoting the professional development of its members in an atmosphere of mutual support.

Nurse Practitioners are nationally recognized as expert health care providers. Jaime addressed the role of the Nurse Practitioner in the ambulatory gastrointestinal setting. She described services provided by the Nurse Practitioner including diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic GI conditions such as Crohn’s disease, Colitis and Hepatitis C, ordering, performing and interpreting diagnostic studies, prescribing medications and other treatments, reviewing pathology reports, providing patient education and counseling, involvement with quality assurance to maintain high quality of care, all while working collaboratively with the gastroenterologist.

Jaime’s presentation allowed the audience to understand the extensive role of the Nurse Practitioner, its unique blend of nursing and medical care and the value these providers bring to the patients, nurses, and physicians in the ambulatory setting.
